Thimphu Festival Tour (7 Night 8 Days)

In Bhutan, a Tshechu is an annual religious festival held in honor of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the saint who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century.
Tshechus are celebrated in monasteries, dzongs, and temples across the country, usually on auspicious dates of the lunar calendar. The highlight of the festival is a series of sacred masked dances (Cham) performed by monks and lay dancers. These dances depict Buddhist teachings, the victory of good over evil, and stories of enlightened masters, and are believed to bring blessings, purification, and merit to spectators.
Beyond its religious importance, Tshechu is also a major social and cultural gathering, where people dress in their finest traditional attire, receive blessings, and come together to celebrate Bhutanese heritage and spiritual values.

Highlights of the Thimphu Tshechu & Drubchen
Punakha, located in western Bhutan, holds great historical and spiritual significance dating back to the 17th century, when Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel unified Bhutan. To commemorate his victory over invading Tibetan forces, he introduced the Punakha Drubchen, which has since been celebrated annually. This unique festival features a dramatic reenactment of the historic battle by local militia, known as pazaps, dressed in traditional war attire.
Punakha Tshechu, introduced in 2005 at the request of local authorities and residents, aims to preserve Buddhist teachings and honor the noble deeds of Zhabdrung Rimpoche. Both festivals showcase vibrant masked dances and religious performances, with events varying each day. The Punakha Dromchoe, a five-day ritual dedicated to the deity Mahakala, preserves ancient religious practices in their traditional form.
